Jeff Resnick faces a new dilemma someone is stalking his sister-in-law, Brenda, who fears that violence from pro-life supporters will escalate near the women's clinic where she works. Or could the vandalism, threatening phone calls, and letters against her have come from her abusive ex-husband? Meanwhile, Jeff grapples with meeting his estranged father and the sister he never knew existed. Could Patty Resnick be the key to Brenda's stalker? And what has that got to do with the death of his brother Richard's colleague?

Cheated by Death The Jeff Resnick Mysteries Book 4 (Audible Audio Edition) LL Bartlett Steven Barnett Lorraine Bartlett Books

Eight months ago unemployed insurance investigator, widower Jeff Resnick is on his way home from hanging with his friends when he's waylaid by a couple of punks with baseball bats. Long story short, he's put into the hospital with a broken head and arm, a concussion, and his apartment is pillaged. Enter into the picture his long estranged, and wealthy physician half-brother Richard Alpert and his significant other, the African-American Brenda, whom he finally married in "Dead In Red". Also in that novel while still recuperating from his beating, Jeff has found work as a bartender for "The Whole Nine Yards", while Richard has found work at the University of Buffalo School of Medicine, and here Brenda is doing volunteer work at a local women's clinic.

While doing his volunteer work at the university, Richard finds out that Jeff's biological father, Chet Resnick, who abandoned Jeff when Jeff was a child, is still alive, but is well on the road to the end to his life. This understandably leads to mixed feelings in Jeff, and this will be compounded by Jeff finding out that he also has a half-sister, Patty, who is the apple of his estranged father's eye.

Because the woman's clinic will do some abortions, the now pregnant Brenda is being harassed by a bunch of self-righteous, glory seeking, anti-choice, compulsive pregnantists. And caught in the middle between Richard trying to get Jeff to reconcile with his lost side of his family, and Brenda's harassment, is Jeff trying to patch together his relationship with his on again and off again girlfriend Maggie Brennan, and deal with visions of a slow, sadistic death of an elderly man, and that of the possible death of Brenda's unborn child.

Then there is a terrorist attack on the clinic and Brenda's friend is murdered, and he finally meets his half-sister and finds her a selfish, bigoted, gold-digging bitch, who only wants to sleep with and steal Richard from Brenda. Into the mix is Brenda's long divorced, abusive, ex-husband Willie Morgan turns up, sent over by Brenda's relatives, who don't appreciate her marrying a white man. And what does he have to do with the shooting, if anything.

As usual, Jeff is trying, and getting better at it, to work out his issues with Richard, continues to go on long walks during which he eventually ends up turning to Buchenwald survivor, and Jeff's psychic mentor Sophie Leven when he needs counseling. Old schoolmate and reporter Sam Nielsen gets a bigger role when Jeff needs some research help. So with these two, all of the series regulars are back, and with this novel, we FINALLY find out just who Sophie is, or was, maybe. If you've read the previous books in this series, you will know what I mean.

"Cheated By Death" is self-published novel, and we can see why. This is an intricate, and often convoluted, serious mystery that deals with serious real-world issues in a non-sensationalistic manner. We get women's right to choose, black racism, white racism, murder, the death of a child, and a psychotic murderer who may or may not have anything to do with the right for a woman to have bodily autonomy.

But at its core, this is a novel about family issues. Jeff's relationship with Richard, Richard's with Jeff, Jeff's with his father and his graspy, greedy, cartoonish, and underdeveloped half-sister. It's no wonder that this novel had to be self-published, in doing so, Bartlett has been given, by herself, more freedom in exploring the serious side of some controversial subject matter. Adult subject matter, told in a non-sensationalistic manner, that couldn't be published by her previous two publishers, the more commercial Five Star and Harlequin book companies.

Nobody here is a superhero, nobody here is super smart, and everybody does understandably dumb things, and they all pay the price for it. This should have won Bartlett an award, as she makes most of today's bestselling thriller writers look like the sensationalistic, formula-driven hacks that they are. So if you're looking for something that is slickly written, professionally plotted, and different than the more commercial crap marketed by most companies, this is the book to read. Just remember, this is book three of four, so far, and while it stands alone, kinda, you really should read the first two books in this series to get the full impact of "Cheated By Death".

Oh yeah, and there's a Stephen King reference in that somebody orders flowers from the Castle Rock Florists.

Cheated by Death The Jeff Resnick Mysteries Book 4 (Audible Audio Edition) LL Bartlett Steven Barnett Lorraine Bartlett Books Reviews

The Jeff Resnick Mysteries are different than most other mysteries I have read. Jeff is not a cop, someone looking for his/her lost spouse or child or someone with special military type training. He is an average guy, down on his luck, then mugged and badly injured. He and his estranged brother are reunited and work together in trying to find the person stalking his sister-in-law. As they learn to work together, they also build on a badly broken relationship of their own. I have become very fond of the characters and plan to read more of The Jeff Resnick Mysteries series.
Fast paced and so many twists you can hardly keep up. A family with so many connections you can hardly remember them all. But a super read!
This story like all good mysteries builds and builds to the final resolution of getting the bad guy!! Having read most of the Resnick collection, I feel that I know Jeff, Richard, Brenda, Maggie, and Sam!! While there is excitement and on the edge of your seat drama, somehow, this book does not compare to a few of the others such as Murder on the Mind which I could not put down. Still a good book and worthy of recommendation.
Love getting it immediately on my from Prime and the ability to loan it to friends!!
I've read all in this series up TIL this one ( # 4 )....Oviously I'll say well written because of my personal pickiness....Love the characters, the intriguing plots of Bartlett's storytelling ability and admit to binging and can't seem to put them down once started..I highly recommend for
thriller, who done it suspense entertainment value without hesitation......
I got the first book just looking for something to read, then got hooked on the series. The main character was beaten up and almost died on the eve of being able to get a good job and start a new life. He is taken in by his wealthy half brother and his girlfriend . It turns out the beating not only caused some brain damage and leaves him with sever headaches, but also new psychic powers where he starts to see scenes in his head of murder sites that he feels compelled to follow up on and ends up solving the crimes. Eventually he enlists his reluctant brother to help him. I like the characters and how they evolve through the series. Don't remember the name of the first book, but if your interested, it will make more sense to start with the first book.
This book gave us more information about the protagonist, Jeff Resnick. I, again, loved this book. My only regret about all the Resnick stories is that Jeff is so intractable and in such poor financial shape. I guess, on the financial issue, I don't much like reading about myself (lol). Unlike Jeff, I don't have a big brother with many millions who is willing to do just about anything to help me out, both physically and financially. But if I were so lucky I certainly wouldn't turn down my brother's desire to assist me in becoming more financially secure, although I wouldn't want to take unfair advantage. Jeff's brother's is trying to assist in Jeff's independence and security because Jeff has problems with debilitating headaches that affect Jeff's ability to work on a 40-hour-per-week job.

I liked the introduction of more of Jeff's family; but, again, I wish the his new-found relatives had been more likeable and not just your basic ne'er do wells.

Taking all of the above into consideration, I still loved the book. Just want Jeff to have something he can be proud of, instead of only having to depend on his brother and sister-in-law.
To put down... how anyone can go through so much and still keep standing....

Well...sort of. Is amazing. A clue towards the middle had me correctly guessing who the killer was, or at least wondering if that was the correct one. I had no idea until the end why.
L.L. Bartlett had me hooked from the. Start to the finish with. This carefully crafted tales wonder if she would be okay with me blaming her for the bags under my eyes?
