The Romance of a Christmas Card edition by Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin Alice Ercle Hunt Literature Fiction eBooks

The Romance of a Christmas Card is a quick, sweet holiday read that makes it hard for the reader not to feel festive and appreciative for all the gifts in their life. Taking the reader to a tiny village in New Hampshire sometime in the early 1900s, this story is one of forgiveness, redemption and a powerful kind of love that makes anything, including a popular Christmas card, seem magical.

Reba, the minister's wife in Beulah, New Hampshire, was a model of cheerfulness. After seeing a beautific view of her friend sitting before her front window, candle burning and door open, seeming to wait for someone one lonely Christmas Eve, she decides to make a Christmas card using the image and send it off for publication. After another Christmas card - this one of the front of the same house and poetically talking about the folks back at home - is published they both serve to bring two wayward son's of the village home, both seeking redemption for the wrongs they have done and both finding forgiveness and love waiting for them where they left it.

This short story is very endearing but, for me, the true measure of a great short story is when I leave it wanting more. More from the characters or setting or something. After reading this story I feel it ended well and I don't necessarily feel like I need any more. The characters aren't ones I will miss now that I finished reading about them, although I have to say that it was enjoyable reading this short snippet into a small, religious village blanketed in wintery wonder. The beautiful illustrations definitely added to the whimsical, old time feel, something you don't often find in books nowadays. It thoroughly put me in the giving, festive mood of the holidays, which is always a good thing.

The Romance of a Christmas Card edition by Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin Alice Ercle Hunt Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A nice read from long ago. I liked the style of writing and found humor in words used that mean other things now. I also see how some things have remained the same, like what causes people's choices to leave their home town and to return. A nice light read. I say give this book a try.
The Romance of a Christmas card is a very sweet Christmas tale. This is about a minister's wife and her inspiration for a Christmas card she created. It's very heartwarming and a perfect, quick read for the holiday season.
I love this old Christmas story. Sweet, simple with a happy ending. It puts you in a Christmas spirit. It is written by the author of Mother Carey's Chickens, and takes place in the same town and has some of the same characters. The movie, Summer Magic, with Haley Mills is based on Mother Carey's Chickens.
two guys growing up together were viewed by their community as mischievous. One was the son of a preacher and naturally the community thought if the preacher couldn't control his own son how could he tell them what to do. The boys both moved away when they became adults and refused to return until they both saw different Christmas cards depicting their home that drew them back.
This is a quaint, if somewhat maudlin, Christmas story. This was published in the early 20th century, so the writing style, vocabulary, and the story's sensibilities reflect the culture of that time. If you enjoy old-fashioned Christmas stories, you would not be wasting your time to take up this book. It is a very quick read.
Overall, this is a cute turn-of-the-Century short story that moved along quite nicely, with interesting characters and a smooth plot.
A beautiful tale of what a simple Christmas card can do in this day and age of computer technology and the Internet. A quaint old-timey Christmas tale in a simple village. What difference can a mere Christmas card make? Perhaps more than the sender might ever realize. The only thing I didn't like about this story was that Letty didn't attend the service at the end, and the story ended without showing her and Dick together. I think it would have had more impact and closure if that scene would've been shown as well. If she didn't attend, it could've shown us Dick and Letty meeting again instead of leaving it all to our imagination. That was an important romantic side to the story that should have been displayed in action. Other than that, I really enjoyed the story. The best part was the merry Santa and father and son meeting again.
