This is another one of those rape turns to love stories so be warned. The H mistakes the h for a courtesan, given the circumstances it was a reasonable assumption. His decision to rape her was not reasonable. He only mans up when he realises she is a virgin gentlewoman - seemingly if she wasn't a lady then rape was fair to whomever the woman might have been. He coerces her into marriage and they have a very bumpy road to their hea. The h leaves the H under some complicate circumstances between her ex-fiance and the H's sister. She ends up in some dreadful situations. Everyone thinks the worst of her and judges her because of her actions. Even after everything is sorted out, you get the feeling the town people won't be so forgiving and will ostracise her because they believe she'd become a prostitute. Honestly it was a long and frustrating read and one that I'd like to forget.
Much in the same way that music comes with explicit lyric warnings and movies come with sex or violence warnings, books should include sexual assault warnings. I will definitely be reading the one and two star warnings for all the books I purchase going forward. Explicit sex scenes in the book??????? Here's a news flash - SEXUAL ASSAULT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SEX AND EVERYTHING TO DO WITH VIOLENCE. I am appalled at the reviewers who term Rafe the "Hero" of the book. He is a violent misogynist. His goal is revenge, to soil another man's "possession" in the same manner he would key his car or slash his tires and with no more consideration for the female than he would have for the car. I don't care if Catherine attended 100 quadroon balls - THERE IS NOTHING CATHERINE COULD HAVE DONE WHICH WOULD MEAN SHE HAD RAPE 'COMING TO HER' OR 'BE WHAT SHE DESERVED'!!!!! If you want to write a story about the plight of women in this time period, terrific. But do NOT use the word "Love" anywhere in association with the story and certainly do not classify it as a "Romance". I, as well, would like a zero star rating. This book was repulsive.
Some would say that Catherine got what she deserved. At times, I thought so too, since she continually pushed the boundaries of conventional society. But then, Catherine Mayfield was a spirited young lady. She might be forgiven, since she was provoked into reckless action to a certain degree. However, she had no idea the extent of the consequences she would have to face.
In this book by Jennifer Blake, filled with the rich history of the deep South, the background setting includes the early days of the American nation, New Orleans in particular, at the time of multiple slave rebellions and insurrection. Two men vying for Catherine's attention add tension and angst to the tale. Most of the book was written from Catherine's point of view. The men she came to know were a mystery to her, but like an onion, the layers were eventually revealed to her, deepening the plot and developing the characters.
This historical fiction moves at a fairly fast pace, with unexpected events around every corner. Rafe is introduced to Catherine as a pirate and usurper. It takes the entire timeline of the book to convince her otherwise. Marcus demonstrates his true colors all throughout the adventure, until at the end we discover the actual nature of the conflict between the two men. Basically a pawn in the struggle, Catherine's life is bewildering until several mysteries are solved.
In spite of the stark reality portrayed in the tale, I enjoyed how the author uses occasional humor as comic relief. By the end of the book, a box of tissues were needed. To me, that's a good thing, because it's a sign that the story was engaging my heart. I also appreciated the beautifully written details of life in the "colonies" at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Kudos to the author for tremendous research.
Warning There are several scenes of explicit love making. Never at any time was this crude or overly graphic. The author has a talent for creating a romantic mood through the use of flowing language. I can recommend this book for adults who enjoy women's historical fiction.
I read this book years ago, liked it then and like it now.
I read this book when it was released in 1977. Now, I am going back and re-reading books that I loved. This one is great.
